Spotting gum disease is important to catch the disorder before it can truly do any serious harm. Because gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a progressive disorder, you can show symptoms of it for a very long time until it progresses into its advanced stages. In its early development, gum disease is known as gingivitis.
Gum disease is an infection of the gums, so physical signs of damage are often present. To help prevent gum disease from destroying your oral health, look for common signs and symptoms such as red, swollen, or tender gums. If your gums feel sore to the touch or have bouts of intense sensitivity, look for other signs of gum disease.
Typically, gum disease causes the tissue around the teeth to pull back away from the teeth, exposing more of the roots. If your teeth appear longer, you may be developing signs of gum disease. Also check to see if you have bad breath symptoms that keep coming back, and ensure your teeth are not wobbly by gently trying to shake them. If your gums are destabilizing due to gum disease, your teeth may be loose or wobbly.
